Billionaire Jack Ma Of Alibaba Reportedly Appears In Melbourne, Australia

According to Chinese media reports, the founder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, billionaire Jack Ma, was recently seen in Australia in the company of an Australian family with whom he has a connection dating back more than four decades.

Ma is currently in Australia, according to anonymous sources cited by yicai.com. Social media users also reportedly spotted Ma at a hotel in Melbourne, where he was seen browsing his mobile phone and drinking Coke. Ma’s connection to the Morley family of Australia dates back to 1980, when they visited Ma’s hometown of Hangzhou, which is also the headquarters of Alibaba. Ken Morley, who has since passed away, brought Ma to Australia in 1985 for his first overseas trip, an experience which Ma said “totally changed” his future. Morley’s friendship and mentorship had a significant impact on Ma and inspired him to make a $20 million philanthropic commitment to support students at the University of Newcastle. Ma’s vision is to provide students with the opportunity to become globally aware and socially conscious citizens, while forming lifelong friendships like those he had with the Morley family in Newcastle. Ma stepped down as executive chairman of Alibaba in 2019 and has since completely withdrawn from the company’s board of directors, though he remains a life-long member of the Alibaba Partnership.
